Overview
Breathlessness on exertion that is new or getting worse always has a cause. Lung conditions such as asthma, COPD and ILD are common causes, but the heart, anaemia, thyroid problems, weight and fitness also play a role. A structured assessment finds the cause and the right treatment.
Common Symptoms
- Breathless walking up stairs or slopes
- Needing to stop when walking
- Breathlessness at night or lying flat
- Wheeze or cough with breathlessness
- Reduced ability to do daily tasks
When to Consult a Pulmonologist
See a specialist if breathlessness is new, increasing or limiting you. Sudden severe breathlessness, chest pain or blue lips need emergency care — call 112.
How We Diagnose It
Assessment may include spirometry, DLCO, impulse oscillometry, the six-minute walk test with oxygen monitoring, chest imaging, blood tests and, where needed, heart tests arranged with cardiology.
Treatment Approach
Treatment depends on the cause found. Breathing techniques and pulmonary rehabilitation advice help many patients alongside treatment of the underlying condition.
