Overview
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common condition in which the upper airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing breathing pauses and reduced oxygen levels. It is associated with cardiovascular risks, daytime impairment and reduced quality of life.
Common Symptoms
- Loud snoring
- Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
- Choking or gasping during sleep
- Unrefreshing sleep
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty concentrating
When to Consult a Pulmonologist
Consult if you have loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or if you have resistant hypertension.
How We Diagnose It
Diagnosis usually involves polysomnography (overnight sleep study) which records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, heart rate and sleep stages.
Treatment Approach
Treatment may include weight management, positional advice, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, or other interventions depending on severity and individual patient characteristics.
